Silent Son 05:06
have you spoken to your brother? did you owe him something or another? how’d it go? and how’s your mother? where’s she living now? have you even bothered to wonder how? no, you’ve taken your orders you’re out the door never stopped to ask yourself what was it all for ‘cause you don’t need answers from up above you can be sure that the only ones that’ll save us from ourselves are the ones we love silent son, I will miss you when you’re gone lead them on with the arrows in your arm a sudden star, sinking on the airwaves, holding on holding on, I will miss my silent son. have you spoken to your brother? where’d he go? is he starving in the gutter or is he belly full? and how’s your mother now that you’ve gone? how will you feed yourself, mr. skinny bones? I am your father, known you all the while. no sense in explaining, holy child. ‘cause we don’t need answers from up above we can be sure that the only ones that’ll save us from ourselves are the ones we love silent son, I will miss you when you’re gone lead them on with the arrows in your arm a sudden star, sinking on the airwaves, holding on holding on, I will miss my silent son.

Elsewhere 03:10
take me home all this fire in my head has got to go I’m an ocean I can feel your waves crashing in my bones and I would be there when you want I would be your dearest one I would be madly in love if I could be elsewhere it comes and goes most times I fill up my mind with so-and-so I tear you open then I smile like it’s out of my control but I can’t know all there is to these lies I won’t show I’m just the host, child one must crack through the shell to pierce the ghost and I would be there when you want I would be your dearest one I would be madly in love If could be elsewhere
5.
Freedom 03:47
I met freedom by a highway sign saw the poverty in her eyes she was young and terrified and her needs seemed rarely satisfied I asked her where she was going she said, “okay, I can light your way but I’m afraid to die.” for a moment I was paralyzed with a feeling I couldn’t quite define she seemed indifferent but she didn’t mind that I was standing there just right beside asked her if she had the time “for what,” she said. “wanna take a ride?” I felt a shiver chase up my spine as I considered what she had in mind she said, “I’m afraid to die. I’m afraid to die” and so was I, but I’d been aching to be crucified all night and the stars were bright in the Colorado night and the moon hung high I opened my eyes and the cars went racing by hopped in the passenger side we were looking like Bonnie and Clyde. we went East and we went West for a time went way out past the borderline. I fell in love with the way she smiled she treated me like some broken child I always told her that we’d be fine but she never called me hers and I never called her mine and she was afraid to die, afraid to die and so was I. I met freedom by a highway sign and we went cruising down that yellow line now I live alone in a home and I call it mine and I don’t miss her (at least most the time) but when I look at to those plains and feel mystified it’s like I can almost see her eyes when we split that bottle of cheap red wine and went driving past the county line and we were afraid to die, afraid to die but we were living like the end of times was nigh. and the stars were bright in the Colorado night and the moon hung high I opened my eyes and the stars were bright in the Colorado night and the moon hung high I opened my eyes and the cars went racing by I met freedom by a highway sign and we went traveling for a time though she was afraid to die and so was I.

O Haniel 03:09
well, I dreamed I saw an angel I dreamed I saw a fire it was fifty feet of pink light and it sounded like a choir it shot down from some constellation held me for a time then released me like a thief deep in repentance for a crime O Haniel! O Haniel! it smiled like we weren’t strangers while I shuddered and I wept and then made may way apart into the darkness where I slept I dug my paws into my guts I ran out in the wild but she chased me down and woke me in the morning in the visage of a child O Haniel! O Haniel! she laughed and took my hand and said, “Now, sir, don’t run and hide I can take you down that rainbow on a quick celestial ride so she raised me up into the sky and not to my surprise she had changed again into some shining beast of flight before my eyes O Haniel! O Haniel! I saw the earth below me, watched the milky way race by and I danced and I sang out in the darkness and I knew that I had died O Haniel! O Haniel! O Haniel! O Haniel!

there is a mark on the skin of the heart of an ancient god who wakes from a dream of devotion and there is a crack in the shell of the sky and it bleeds out and drains down into the ocean the old ones have no place to hide their sculpted faces are denied, but their eyes are wide open eyes wide open eyes there is a sound where we live underground and we supplicate at the altar to the physics of motion we work every night no one’s very polite, but we’re paid quite well and we all get a share of the potion the mystic horseman takes a ride his visions choke him from inside but his eyes are wide open eyes wide open eyes there is a path to the sea and a smattering of strangers who bend at their knees and believe they’ve been chosen the ferryman sighs there’s a strange fire in the sky he would take them aboard but the sails are torn and the top-mast is broken the congregation must decide they turn their faces to the side with their eyes wide open eyes wide open eyes wide open eyes wide open eyes wide open

True Love 04:45
life is the hollow I fill with a voice and struggle with the absence of a note to be sounded, a spring to reach the source the village is surrounded the killer feels no remorse but true love is underneath us all true love is underneath us all true love is underneath us all suffering is the tincture we drink out in the cold don’t trust the neighbors everything’s been sold and death aches from the center and poison rains from the sky the novitiate is preparing in the still of his worship to a god the others loathe. the marksman takes his position, the martyr takes his oath. but true love is underneath us all true love is underneath us all true love is underneath us all true love is underneath us all true love is underneath us all

One two three four This is nothing I haven’t seen before But she’ll be five six seven eight nine She’ll be alright when you are far away If this vision is right If this vision is right If this vision is right Then I’m seeing those lights Going out, like their watching you go by But we don’t mind, right? Let them fade from sight They will die and you’ll live to see the light If this vision is right Vision is right Vision is right While I am nothing like those lights When I decide to see my world in light If this vision is right If this vision is right If this vision is right

Is it nice out where you are? Do the others treat you kind? On that distant shore, Is there something altogether more Than we expected to find? Do you stretch in the morning, Turn the stove on, take your coffee With some sugar on the side? And are you coming out tonight? Are you coming out tonight? Is it strange up in the light Where the stars are burning bright? On the planet where you are Are their stars? Are their rainbows Every once in awhile? Do you feel things coming on? Do your feelings linger on? Or do you just feel alright? And are you coming out tonight? Are you coming out tonight? Can you hear this silly song On the channel that you’re on? Are you there? Is there something wrong? Do you feel alright? Do you feel at all? Do you miss anyone? Is there some place you can go When the cosmos crushes everything You think you have inside? And are you coming out tonight? Are you coming out tonight? Are you coming out tonight? Are you coming out tonight? Are you coming out tonight? Are you coming out tonight? Are you coming out tonight?

about

Recorded in Denver, Colorado during the month of January, 2015, Range Songs is the debut full-length album by Mickey Theis. This collection of eleven lushly arranged originals run the emotional gamut from playful to sorrowful, fiery to quietly searching.

Folk and Americana listeners will enjoy the more familiar song structures of "Orphan" and “Freedom,” while the more confessional "Places" and "Elsewhere" navigate darker, more elaborate musical terrain. Other tracks, like "True Love" and “Silent Son” demonstrate Theis’ craft as a budding producer, as he skillfully weaves sparse, Folk melodies into Springsteen-like, anthemic Rock. These more traditional tracks support a compelling counterpoint in songs like the haunting Folk number, “O Haniel” or Nilsson-esque Country lament, “Are You Coming out Tonight?"

Range Songs marks the first full-length release on Theis’ label, Infinite Gesture Records.
